The A-shaped barre chords are tough as hell. I’ll Follow You Into the Dark (no capo) and Miss Misery (capo 3 or maybe 4) are songs I like to practice for a-shape, c-shape, and d-shape chord changes (the former has several F-B flat changes and the latter has a d shape and several c shapes) Even if E and A cover a lot, they can all be helpful down the road and harder voicings are easier to pick up gradually over time. In general, I think it is worth practicing all 5 basic open chord barre shapes early (E-A-D-C-G in that order of priority). Eventually, it can be helpful to practice quick changes between F and B-flat. Practicing a four finger version without the high E or barre would also probably be a helpful progression. It’s just a matter of getting better at the stretch. As others have mentioned, you can practice on higher strings to start building muscle memory. I think the four finger method is much more versatile and sounds better. With the double barre, you can kinda train yourself to bend the ring finger backwards so it doesn’t touch the high E. Most people learn the double barre method initially (bar third finger across the dgb strings), but I think it’s worth learning both. That seems to be just a natural way to keep your wrist from breaking.ī/Bflat is just a really hard chord. And don’t be worried if your fingers are a bit angled against the fret board and don’t go straight up and down. Also, I will use my pinky on top of my ring finger for extra pressure if I find I’m a little bit too weak. If my index finger is lightly touching the low E, and I accidentally hit it, it’s muted. I like to strum it from string five through string two, once my fingers are in position. But don’t worry about playing that high E string. Place your ring finger on strings four through one on your fourth fret as you say. Try to have your first finger lightly touching the underside of the low E, sixth string. Bar the number five through number one string on the second fret with your first finger. I’m also relatively new but I figured out how to play those root five bar chords. I agree with the folks who have been giving you advice.
